Replacing the speakers in a 1990 Magna tp Exec

Hi all,
I'm the proud owner of a 1990 Magna tp and I have recently been encountering quite a lot of distortion when trying to listen to music above about half volume, this problem has only begun recently so i wager that the speakers have become worn out from 29 years of entertaining their owner.
Unfortunately in my history with the car, I have yet to take a look at the sound system, aside from replacing the original cassette player (which unfortunately broke) with a more modern unit, so I have very little idea of where to start.

If you know anything about replacing the speakers in my model please leave your tips and suggestions in this thread, I would especially like to know how to remove the speakers and specifics about the wiring.

also: If you have any speaker recommendations I welcome your input.

also also: if you know of any tutorials that will help me please link them, your help is very much appreciated

As you would know, there are not many TM/TP cars left, so consequently not many active owners.

I am not one of them.

The best way to find information about 1st gen. models is to go to the last page of the sub-forum index:

and then work forward.

I have found 1 thread(page 106 of 109 total) that might be helpful:

(there was an earlier thread dealing with similar, but it did not provide much information)

It might take you an hour or so to go through all 109 pages of the threads listed, but that would be my suggestion.

The key word I looked for was "speakers".

"Sound system" might be another.

You might like to try the same procedure in the "Car Audio" sub-forum, but I believe it would be less useful than the actual 1st gen. specific sub-forum.

Very helpful thanks, i had tried taking the section of dash mentioned in the first thread you linked but i noticed it would not come off completely, i now know that i need to undo the wingnut to get it off so thats super helpful.

The rear speakers have been replaced with 25 watt sony speakers which have been a fantastic upgrade.

Also: i have heard that the tp/tm series are hard to come by these days, but i havent heard why, if you know of any more info about this i’d like to look further into it

Unfortunately, my knowledge of TM/TP cars is quite limited.

You will need to rely for help on what other 1st gen. members here @AMC can provide, or that which can be obtained via the search method that I pointed out to you previously.

I recommend that you spend some time searching the forum in the manner that I suggested.

You will find more useful information that way if you are prepared to invest an hour or so of your own time.

As the number of active TM/TP users has dropped, this will be the best way to obtain pertinent information.

Those owners might not necessarily be around anymore to post a response, but the information that many of them would have posted previously has a chance to live on.

I am happy that I could help, even if it was in a limited way.
