    Default Tw Magna questions

Recently I picked up a 2005 TW Auto Magna. I have a couple questions I haven't been able to find elsewhere online.
The automatic transmission I read online in these models have a filter inside the sump part of the trans. Issue is my local auto parts and dealer says there is no filter for this one (4 speed) only the 5 speed auto? Also I used penrite full synthetic auto trans fluid to meet Mitsubishi sp3 spec is that okay? I'm considering buying the external trans cooler from rpw too if that's good.

The car seems to "shiver" slightly when going into reverse, I think it's more the engine than the transmission as it use to do it in drive but once I changed the drivers side engine mount it got much better.
Also the bloody rear view mirror anyone else's shake like crazy driving normal?

All in all pretty impressed with the car for the money it's definitely good value and the v6 is nice to drive. Just needs a few things done to be perfect.

they're a great car, but make sure it's timing belt has been changed. I'd also change all fluids. My 4sp used to shudder changing into top but that was fixed by a tube of Shudder-fix, which I got on Ebay. If you do the timing belt, replace the back 3 plugs. I got them at a good price from Rockauto.

Try to get the manual. I have it and got it from this site.
The manual I think says to flush the trans fluid, rather than drain/refill. This implies there is no filter. BUT there is heaps of stuff in here about the transmission(s).
I have a 260,000Km TW and it is a wonderful bus. Runs on gas also and is cheap as chips to use. Keep up the maintenance and follow advice given here and you will be OK.

    Greetings all

OK, we all know I'm not the most mechanically inclined guy on the forum but I have close to a eidetic memory and am smart enough to listen to the people who do know so .. what I have been TOLD is as follows

    1. The TW does have a transmission filter in the 4sp automatic, it is internal and not even accessible with a full bottom plate off service and it requires a fairly substantial strip down to reach it there for :-

    2. Some transmission specialists (including the one I am thinking of using if I move away from the local Mitsubishi dealer where the car was bought as their expertise becomes less relevant after 13 years) say that forced flushing of the gearbox may not be that good an idea as it can force detritus that is (relatively) harmlessly lodged in the various nooks and crannies of the box into the filter causing an earlier loss of flow than otherwise would be the case.

Quite a few people suggest simply dropping the pipe "downstream" of the gearbox and running the engine and feeding in fluid through the filler tube until the fluid is pumped out clean. It's said to be a bit wasteful and messy if you are not a dab hand at it but it's what I'm going to ask for myself next time around.

    3. All the really technical guys I've read posts from here and spoken to elsewhere say use genuine Mitsubishi SP III and accept no substitutes .... perhaps this is the cause of your shiver going into reverse? I wouldn't rule out the benefit of dropping the battery leads and then doing a gearbox "relearn" procedure either ...it's helped me once or twice.

    4. The TW isn't quite as fragile gearbox wise as earlier models but still and all, most people I talk with think of an external cooler as a necessity rather than a good idea if you have long term attachment for the vehicle. Especially if you tow or drive it hard, I don't and Dad didn't before me. Deterioration of the bottom radiator cooling tank over time leading to cooper fragment or water contamination is apparently just as much of an issue as the gearbox overheating itself. I haven't done this yet, it's next on my list especially as I intend to squeeze a few more KW over the current 170 or so I have now.

    5. No, 13 years in the rear vision mirror is still as steady as a rock

Once again, I'm retired, in my life I've worked in technical electronics, I/T, Radio communication, as a firearms and unarmed combat instructor have done and still do on request ordinance disposal, fly unmanned aerial vehicles and taught guitar for 47 years on the side BUT it's rare day that I can but a nut on a bolt without cross threading it. If someone disagrees with anything I've stated above, probably best to consider them the expert .

Good luck with your Magna, we've treated ours kindly. It's returned the favour.

    Regards
