Valentines day 2015 I lost all gears in a TJ 4 speed.
Got called into the workshop to view the damage. Some very chunky gears were shattered and the wave spring was in tiny pieces.
Had it rebuilt and still going ok today.

That's what I was thinking of. The planentary gears were one thing I thought of, clutches and pump were on the list too.
Sorry I didn't see your post before you spent the money. Can't see the sense in spending 3K on a vehicle this old. $440 plus fitting for a second hand box from a low mileage write off seems like a better option to me. Anyone else in Brisbane with this issue I suggest you start with a call to TTR AUTOMOTIVE - RANDALL ST, SLACKS CREEK, BRISBANE PHONE / TXT O4O3 7547 64

I don't have any affiliation with these guys other than I've been using them since I purchased a 380. They have the stock the knowledge and their prices suit the Scottish heritage of my fiscal outlook.
I think it is "horses for courses" and impossible to make the same judgement call in every case.
For instance. if the car was purchased new (or low mileage). been well maintained, is still in good condition and has needed little spent on it over that time, I wouldn't hesitate with the 3K if I intended keeping the car, it would still owe me nothing.
On the other hand, if I bought a car that had several owners and a higher mileage and was unsure of how it has been driven or didn't intend keeping it long term, then the 2nd hand box would be a more attractive option.
..."WOW...]ook. at that SVU"...said no-one EVER!!!
Thanks for the reply, but we bought the car new and it's been a good reliable car. If I spent $440.00 on a second hand box and it gave up after say, 6 months, where would I be than? A transmission could come out of a low mileage car that's been driven by a lunatic and never had the fluid changed, you just don't know. Anyway, it's done now by a bloke that has a good rep'.
Yes spend all that money and the one you buy may be no better, its a personal thing if someone want to spend that money on their car, buy a new car and lose $5000 as soon as you drive off in it, to spend $3000 on a car you intend to keep for quite a few years is a good investment in peace of mind and reliability plus when it comes to sell the car you can say its had this work done to it.
Plus of course, Slacks Creek's a long way from Bribie.
