Default GTVI AWD Series 2 Massive Gear box failure.

    Hi all
Have just joined AMC and seen some fantastic car. I was hoping to get some advice . My car is the following
2005 GTVi AWD with 100k on the clock, the other day the gear box was hunting for gears, there was a whineing sound. I took it to the Mitsa dealer where the car has been service for the last 3 year( since I owned the Car) . Was told the gear box was completely stuffed and would need a replacement!!!!
Cost for new Gear box 6,100 dollars. Cost for Exchange gearbox 2600 dollars with 3 months warrenty.
Is the GTVi 5 speed gearbox that bad that after 100k it just dies? ATM the car cant be moved and they are placing pressure on me to get them to do work or get the car TOWED away.
Any suggestions would be grateful .
    cheers
    Busted gearbox.

    1) get the car towed home FAR FAR AWAY FROM A MITSU DEALER
    2) Ring up mitsubishi Wreckers. AWD's are not that common persay but there plenty of gearboxes out there.
    3) get a local mechanic to install for you. not a hard job.

Apparently the wave spring can break in these. I'd be sourcing a 2nd hand unit, but have it checked to see if it has the upgraded spring and changing it if not. Yeah its all extra $s though.
Dont think any of the AWD's on here have had this problem.
Regular full flush & trans cooler is worth it to. I wonder how many flushes' yours has had in 100k?

I pressume you are the second owner which means the 10 year 150K km drivetrain warranty is gone. Has the trans been serviced at all? If you have the log book and service papers, look through it and see what they used for the trans fluid. Just because it was serviced at a mitsubishi dealer, does not mean they used the proper fluid (especially those multi-make dealers). If they used the wrong fluid, I'd be challenging the dealer to get it replaced.

Just remember mate that the AWD gearbox is different to the FWD box. State that to a wrecker or spare parts person when looking for one.
The AWD box is meant to be fairly bulletproof. Could be wrong but have heard that they have EVO internals. Anyone confoirm this?

Had exactly the same thing happen gearbox acted the same way and it was the brake light fuse (65cents) which had blown after towing a trailer with a shorting wire. Check the fuses and get it out of the Mitsubishi dealer ASAP.

I'm just about to tick over 180,000 and still runs like new. Like usual, make sure you keep up your tranny flushes every 40,000.
