well, normally the thermostat seems to work perfectly. Have you seen a sticking thermostat cause an intermittent problem?

I'm not sure if the fans are switching on properly. It can go 3/4 of the way to H and still only one fan runs. But if I switch on the AC, both fans run, and it then cools down a bit.

I have not had any cooling system problems with my car(except for a radiator cap that had exceeded it's "use by " date - easily found & fixed) but, from memory of reading threads about cooling system problems @AMC, I recall that the normal cooling fan(not the a/c fan) works in 3 stages.

I have searched some previous threads about cooling system problems:

    https://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/sh...=1#post1647811

It seems that there are 3 fan relays.

Section 54 of the workshop manual.

One or more of these might be faulty.

Earlier in that thread,I also describe how to test if a fan is working by probing the motor side of the fan connector with leads and applying 12v. directly from the battery:

    https://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/sh...=1#post1647797

To me, it seems like the first and/or second stages might not be operating as they should.

This might also be related to the cooling temperature sensor(not the temperature sender - in dash readout).

That is about the best I can do from long distance.

    EDIT:

From the Auto Electrical section(Section 54) of the workshop manual:

Upper left schematic showing the location of the 3 individual relays controlling the radiator fan in the engine bay fusebox.

(2 extra & separate relays for the A/C [Condenser] fan)

It is good to hear of the successful outcome.

    What was the opinion provided?

Did both components need to be replaced to effect a solution?

Or, was it possible to fix the problem by replacing only the thermostat, and replace the radiator as ongoing insurance?

My mechanic thought it was probably radiator. I got the radiator and t'stat both v cheap (even tho' genuine), and I decided that while he was working on it, and draining off coolant etc, I might as well get both done. I think the old rad was probably at fault because before the big fan would run most of the time to keep it cool when idling, now it hardly cuts in at all. So the new radiator is definitely better.

Summer's coming, it's going to be hot, I want the car to be OK.
