Labour to Replace Fuel Pump and Filter

Hi guys,

I'm having my fuel pump/filter replaced today by a new mechanic, and I'm wondering what I should expect to be charged for labour? They said that the fuel tank may need to be drained, because I suspect that old petrol has restricted the fuel supply somewhere.

What's a rough estimate on labour for fuel pump/filter/draining the fuel tank?

1hr is plenty to replace the pump and filter and drain tank. its under the rear seat which clips out in secs then 4 screws for the cover plate then about 6 nuts and 2 clips to undo the sender/pump unit and out it comes about a 10 min job total . the filter is gotton from underneath again takes literally 5 mins to remove and refit. most workshops will charge by the hour .

Wow, that's a lot quicker than I thought it would be! They said they may need the car for two days, which had me a little worried. Thanks for the info.

I would love to see a fuel tank properly drained, cleaned and refitted in an hour, I would employ that person on the spot if they did it properly that is for sure.

To pump out the fuel you could get done in an hour but not if you also want to clean out the tank. In general if the tank is filthy inside which it often is on cars run on LPG and rarely run on fuel I just replace the tank as is much easier and less labour.

If the inside of the tank is dirty replacing the fuel pump will be a waste of time as the pre filter will block again pretty fast.

Not sure exactly how many hours, but it was $415 in labour to drain the tank, clean it out, replace the pump, replace the filter and flush the fuel lines. That also included fitting a new set of brake pads.

Mal, they complemented you on the engine conversion and said it was a very tidy job.

Did they comment on the state of the tank internally? Pressure and flow was within spec when we tested it here so would be curious to see if this has finally solved the issue

They said that the tank was very dirty, and that the fuel filter was almost blocked. The car ran perfectly after I picked it up. I took it for a longer drive last night and it ran fine for about an hour, then the problem returned for 10 minutes or so. Since then it's been fine, so I'm hoping that it won't return.

I'm starting to think it may be transmission related, but it seems more intermittent now. Also have never noticed the problem on LPG... very strange.

Sounds like there is a still a little bit of crapola in the tank/lines which I'd think should be expected.
