Hey I've got some very similar issues with my 2000 tj executive. It's been going on for a while now. It seems to happen when I'm driving on pretty steep hills, as I accelorate it starts to splitter like brrr-rrr-rr, and It comes right pretty quick, it's done it twice now since I started thinking I'd fixed itbt it was really bad when I first got it, the rpms would go up/down. My girlfriend noticed today the rpms didn't "flutter" like they use to..
I bought a 2nd hand dizzy off eBay got a mate to come and do it but he only replaced the guts of it left the original cap on it. So I'm tossing up whether I should just buy a b'new dizzy and get it put on or take it off the TL and swap an over but do you think it's still the distributor
It has been fine until the last few days. I thought I had fixed it. After a couple months it came back. I'm not sure what to do now.. a part of me thinking stuff it take it to mitsubishi for a full diagnostic, I've never had to do it before so if I did that would they took there computers up to it and test e'thing and be able to tell me f our sure what's wrong with it, even if it's a number of things..
Cant help thinking that the coil in the distributor is the problem.
There is heaps of stuff here about the problem. Many members describe the fault and what they have done. I suggest you read through all the postings on the distributor and see if any of it agrees with what you are complaining of.
In a response of mine, I try to explain what my experience tells me about ignition coils. My recommendation is that if a distributor/coil problem is the diagnosis, then dont bother with a second hand coil. It is most likely that these coils have a problem with the design/manufacture, and if that is correct, then ALL coils WILL ultimately fail. The problem is either due to material incompatibility matters, or a problem with internal partial discharges destroying the insulation. Either way, coils will fail after a certain number of operating hours, with high temperature conditions shortening the life. A Tassie car will probably do more miles than a Northern Territory car.
Hope this helps.
