    Hi guys,

    I've had my ralliart magna for only a few weeks and there are a few small niggly things I need to sort out.

    Firstly was the seeping water pump and slapping timing belt, so I had my mechanic fit a new timing belt kit, tensioner kit (which had no tension in it and was leaking) & water pump - that is rectified.

    It then developed a tack-tack tapping noise in the rear bank and sounds like it's coming from the rear rocker cover... is it a collapsed spring, blocked lifter or oil gallery? I spent hours researching this forum and that is what I have narrowed it down to.

    It occurs intermittently so I had the engine flushed and didn't make the sound for the past week after driving to Newcastle and also ACT from Sydney, that is, until I got home about 5min from where I live on Friday, it then stopped again. It's done 149000km and the engine is healthy, now running penrite 5-30w full synthetic. Runs very strong, no issues there

    Should I just give it more time as the engine flush definitely made a difference, hence I seem to think that one of the oil galleries is still partially blocked? Maybe I should give it another engine flush...is there an additive which can stay in my fresh oil as I don't want to waste my new Penrite oil if I go down this path?

    Secondly, will this noise become detrimental to the health to the health of my engine?

    5w 30 sounds a little on the light side. To me anyway, I could be wrong.

    My car has lifter tick (RATTLE) even after replacing everything upstairs, so I'm checking my oil pressure next, that and/or the oil pick up.

    I did the same as you, in pursuit of an evasive lifter tick; different weight oils and engine flushes. I thought I had it licked replacing all the valve running gear.

    I just watched your video!! Holy smoke man, is the camshaft still tied down?!? Thats horrendous! My lifter tick is nothing, NOTHING, like that. I'd be popping the two top cam covers off sand checking the timing belt - watching it as the engine is revved. With a bit of luck its just a slightly loose belt rattling against the plastic covers.

    Are your accessory belts and pulleys in good nic'??

    I actually pulled off the sump plate and oil pick up was clean.

    Timing belt is new and other belts are like new, it's definitely not a belt sound as I addressed that issue.

    What weight oil is recommended as I'm also thinking it's a bit thin?

    When I had the thicker oil which the mechanic added it was dead quiet...like I said though, it only made the noise once so I think thicker oil will address it

    Wow. All I can say it sounds really bad (which you already knew). I'd be very hesitant to even have the engine running (for fear of causing damage) until it was in the hands of an expert mechanic.

    Good luck. I'd love to hear what it ends up being.

    I am a gluten for research and I now feel comfortable with what I need to do next, also makes sense as my engine was quiet until I did my oil change with the thinner penrite hpr 5 which is 5-40w.

    Madmagna from Mitsfix seems to know his stuff and quotes "If a general oil, go the Penrite HPR10. Premium Oil go Penrite Syn5" and also states that he recommends this to his customer base.

    HPR10 is 10w-50
    SYN is 5w-60, however, I can't find this oil on the company website...is 'ten tenths premium 5' the replacement for this range as per below link?

    I'm not sure if you're using the 5W30 or 5W40 but, from the link above, the 5W30 offers a thinner film of protection than a 5W40 - maybe your issue?
    I'm using the fully syn 5W40 (with no issues or problems)

    Thanks for the link, This is great info!

    Since switching to 5w-40, it only made the noise on start up after the oil change and then went away and hasn't played up at all...in my case, I should have run the 10w-50 (HPR10) as it is highly recommended by forum members so I will probably switch the oil but what a waste of good quality full synthetic 5w-40.

    The engine only did 7000km over the past 4 years and since driving it regularly, I think it fixed itself (partially blocked oil gallery)
