    Thanks ac1176

I managed to DL the PDF version of the workshop manual and not so easy to decipher their ABS trouble shooting processes.
The nearest fault process description is that of the ABS light coming on twice .
It doesn't really fit my case but the fault charting does kind of point to issues with the hydraulic unit or pressure switch.

    My case:
ABS fails self check after the car has not been started for many months.
ABS light comes on with ignition switch ON
ABS light turns OFF after car is started
ABS light turns ON again after self check is completed

This cycles repeats for several car start cycles until eventually the self check completes successfully.
After that everything works normal until after I moth ball the car again for 6 month or so.

My guess is that the pressure valves start to work after being "exercised".

ABS light comes on with ignition switch ON
ABS light turns OFF after car is started
ABS light turns ON again after self check is completed
    The correct sequence should be:
    1. ABS light on when keys turned to ON
    2. ABS light remains on while engine is cranking
    3. ABS light remains on after engine starts - whirring noise may be heard from passenger-side of engine bay during this time for less than a second (pump motor running during self test)
    4. ABS light goes out after about 1 second

The self test should only last a second or so after the engine is running.

ABS light turns ON again after self check is completed
How soon after? Straight away? Minutes later? Only after the car is moving? Reading the error codes should help you narrow it down.

Yes, that's about right except for,

    5. After 2 or 3 minutes the light turns on again.

During that time you can hear it whirring for short periods - 4 or 5 times.
And during the whirring - sometimes you can hear a short burst of "rapid clicking".
Eventually during one of the whirring periods there will be a longer burst of "rapid clicking".
After that the ABS self check completes quickly and without further fail.

The ABS system goes through the same weird initial cycle with the car stationary or moving.

This only happens when ever I don't use the car for a long period.
If I remember to start the car during these periods (I should always do that but I just forget!) then this issue never crops up.

Next time I'll try and read the error code it spits out (if any!).
