Default 94 TS Wagon needs a reco motor

Is my 2.6L 94 TS Wagon still worth replacing the motor?

    What do you think?

Pros and cons of doing/not doing it?

Other alternatives, like fixing what is wrong with it, second hand motor?

    Default second hand motor

current selling market value for a 4 cyl TS wagon
registered in good condition is $1000

    unregistered less than $500

before the used engine goes in

do the seals and timing cogs and chains
    fix oil leaks
    check welsh plugs

There is a plethora of TR/TS Magnas to find a good motor from in Pick a Part, DIY Autoparts, Imlachs, any wreckers etc. It would be more economical to just fit a replacement second hand engine.

Fitting a secondhand engine is actually what I have in mind. I liked this car particularly the body I can't see any rust at all for its age, except for the flaking paint. It has power windows and cruise control too.

The reason it is grounded right now is that it's making alot of clanking noise. After I removed the rocker cover I found out that the right timing chain guide broke off and the chain is chewing unto it making the loud takataka noise.

You could perhaps sort that by just buying the chain, guides etc from a wreck at pick a part. Less than $100 and it will be fixed.

Bit hopeful expecting to find a 'good' motor anywhere, seeing they are 20+ years old. Same for buying a second hand chain and guides from a wrecker. They aren't that expensive new anyway.
You may strike it lucky though - check wrecks for speedos reading at 100,000 km or a 'recon motor' sticker under the bonnet of a car with crash damage.

Just swapping a random one in would be a waste of time though.

I've found a few with low kms on them - I pulled a M9 head from a 118k kms TS and then the ECU/loom/distributor etc from a 91k kms TR. The TS was crash damaged while the TR was tidy inside and out so I did wonder why it ended up there - perhaps auto transmission issues. Both were free of sludge and varnish under the rocker covers so that's always a good sign.
