Most of your post I agree with, except for the mods required to take a magna to 300whp.
I morossoe'd Jasons TH and according to the calculator he's got over 300fwhp and thats with a fairly mild cam. This was assuming his car weighed around 1550 down the track. I think you'll also see Cthulu knocking on the door of 300fwhp soon too.

Apart from that, yeah lots of money - enough that you could just buy a 3000gt and tinker with that to turn it into a driftpig if you were mitsi oriented.
